National Parks
A natural break in the Cumberland Mountains, Indians passed through the gap on the trail called the warriors path, later pioneers called it in the Wilderness Road, which was first explored by Dr. Thomas Walker and Daniel Boone. Visitors Center with museum, iron furnace, Hensley Settlement, Cudjos Cavern, Pinnacle Overlook, and Cumberland Gap tunnel.
One of the nations newest national park established in 1974 and includes 119,000 acres of natural wilderness, rivers, and back country in Southeast Kentucky and Northeastern Tennessee. This museum has ghost structures representing the simple homes, schools, and churches. You can access the area by driving or riding the Big South Fork Scenic Railway.
The U.S. Forest maintains 700,000 acres of beautiful timberland in portions of 21 eastern Kentucky counties stretching from Morehead in the north to the Tennessee border. There are nearly 500 miles of trails and 800 miles of roads under the forest service. Among the numerous recreational facilities available are campgrounds, picnic areas, ramps and beaches.

Exit 25, Go West Niagara of the South, this 150-foot wide and 70-foot drop, boosts the only Moonbow in the Western Hemisphere. This park features nature hikes, horseback riding, white water rafting, visitor center, gift shop with Kentucky crafts, and picnic shelters along the riverbank.
Pineville On 25E The Mountain Range is a western section of the giant Appalachian Mountain System. Rewarding area for those interested in natural and cultural history. The park is located in an old growth forest with some trees over 200 years old. The park features swimming, nature trails, picnic shelters, Chained Rock with a pinnacle overlook of the town of Pineville.
Barbourville on 25E Dr. Walker, physician and surveyor, led the first documented expedition through Cumberland Gap and built the first log cabin by a Whiteman in Kentucky in April 1750. Replica of the cabin stands on original site. The park features picnic shelters, miniature golf, and a gift shop.
Exit 38, London This park features a Mountain Life Museum; a tribute to the 19th Century Laurel County, with Pioneer Relics and native Indian artifacts. The McHargue's Mill is a restored working mill, which includes the largest collection of grist millstones. The park also features miniature golf, swimming, hiking and camping.

Museums
The birthplace of Kentucky Fried Chicken. Listed in the National Register. The restored dining area seats 96. See the Colonel's kitchen as it was in 1940. Artifacts and memorabilia of colonel Sanders and the history of KFC.
Exit 11 Operated by the University of the Cumberlands. The museum has the Henklemann Life Science Exhibit, which features a collection of specimens of animals ranging from the short-tailed shrew to the Gigantic Polar Bear.
Exit 62 Hands on, interactive exhibits await you as you stroll through Kentucky music history and artifacts.
Middlesboro Airport See the place that was buried under 268 feet of ice for over 50 years that has been restored. Named the Glacier Girl, the P-38 crashed-landed on Greenland's ice cap during World War II.

Laurel County celebrates its heritage as home of Colonel Harland Sanders. The festival is downtown which hosts over 200,000 visitors with 4 days of "egg-citement" entertainment, rides, contests, parades, car show, dancing, art and crafts, exhibits, 5k run, World largest Stainless Steel Skillet, lots of food and much more. Held on the last full weekend in September.
City wide celebration, arts, crafts, concessions, antique car show, parade, rides, street dancing, clogging. The festival runs mid August.
Courthouse square, weekend after Labor Day. The festival begins on Thursday and runs through Saturday night with arts, crafts, music, and plenty of down home cooking
The oldest festival in Kentucky. Held annually in Barbourville, the first full weekend of October. The Festival features a parade and a visit form the Cherokee Indians of North Carolina. A feast is held for the singing of the Cane Treaty between the Indians and Barbourville citizens.
