Cumberland Gap National Historic Park - 248-2817

A natural break in the Cumberland Mountains, Indians passed through the gap on the trail called the warriors path, later pioneers called it in the Wilderness Road, which was first explored by Dr. Thomas Walker and Daniel Boone. Visitors Center with museum, iron furnace, Hensley Settlement, Cudjos Cavern, Pinnacle Overlook, and Cumberland Gap tunnel.

 

Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area - 376-5073

One of the nations newest national park established in 1974 and includes 119,000 acres of natural wilderness, rivers, and back country in Southeast Kentucky and Northeastern Tennessee. The park features a visitor center, camping hiking, horseback riding, fishing and white water rafting. Blue Heron Coal Mining Camp better known as mine 18. This museum has ghost structures representing the simple homes, schools, and churches. You can access the area by driving or riding the Big South Fork Scenic Railway.

The U.S. Forest maintains 700,000 acres of beautiful timberland in portions of 21 eastern Kentucky counties stretching from Morehead in the north to the Tennessee border. There are nearly 500 miles of trails and 800 miles of roads under the forest service. Among the numerous recreational facilities available are campgrounds, picnic areas, ramps and beaches.

Niagara of the South, this 150-foot wide and 70-foot drop, boosts the only Moonbow in the Western Hemisphere. This park features nature hikes, horseback riding, white water rafting, visitor center, gift shop with Kentucky crafts, and picnic shelters along the riverbank.

The Mountain Range is a western section of the giant Appalachian Mountain System. Rewarding area for those interested in natural and cultural history. The park is located in an old growth forest with some trees over 200 years old. The park features swimming, nature trails, picnic shelters, Chained Rock with a pinnacle overlook of the town of Pineville.

Dr. Walker, physician and surveyor, led the first documented expedition through Cumberland Gap and built the first log cabin by a Whiteman in Kentucky in April 1750. Replica of the cabin stands on original site. The park features picnic shelters, miniature golf, and a gift shop.

This park features a Mountain Life Museum; a tribute to the 19th Century Laurel County, with Pioneer Relics and native Indian artifacts. The McHargue's Mill is a restored working mill, which includes the largest collection of grist millstones. The park also features miniature golf, swimming, hiking and camping.

The birthplace of Kentucky Fried Chicken. Listed in the National Register. The restored dining area seats 96. See the Colonel's kitchen as it was in 1940. Artifacts and memorabilia of colonel Sanders and the history of KFC.

Operated by the University of the Cumberlands. The museum has the Henklemann Life Science Exhibit, which features a collection of specimens of animals ranging from the short-tailed shrew to the Gigantic Polar Bear.
